Norwegian’s innovative Freestyle Cruising dining, excursion, and accommodation options, allow for greater flexibility and freedom on board their ships.
Norwegian Cruise Lines are pioneers of the Freestyle Cruise. Unlike traditional cruises of the past which came with set meal times, seating arrangements, and limited dining room options, Freestyle Cruising gives passengers the freedom to choose their experience both on board the ship and in port.
Dining Options: Pick the Time, Place and Dress Code
Norwegian’s freestyle dining options allow passengers to choose when they want to eat and where they want to eat. Instead of being subject to set dining times on the ship, the ability to choose the time in which to eat enables cruisers to plan their day accordingly- whether that means having a relaxing day poolside and grabbing a hamburger or barbequed meal from one of the pool eateries or having a formal sit down dinner at one of the fine dining restaurants on board the ship.
The flexibility of dining at one’s leisure allows passengers to choose not only when to eat but also the location. Choosing from one of the Norwegian’s cruise ships’ many specialty restaurants can be a daunting- but delicious- task. From French, Chinese, and Italian to Tex-Mex, steakhouses, buffets, and fine dining rooms, Norwegian lets people choose the type of cuisine they prefer. All of Norwegian’s fleet has a number of restaurants both included in the cruise price and those which charge a cover fee ranging from $10 US per person to $25 US per person to dine there. The ships feature both family friendly dining options, room service, and 24 hour comfort food options.
The dress code for each restaurant varies widely throughout the day. The poolside restaurants and main buffets allow beach attire for breakfast and lunch which reflect a casual atmosphere. The fine dining rooms have a smart casual dress code at dinnertime meaning no shorts for men and no bathing attire. The buffet and 24 hour restaurants are strictly casual attire for dinner.
Freestyle Excursions: Freedom to Choose Activities on Shore
Norwegian’s flexibility in excursions means travelers can choose the type of excursion they would like to participate in. Or they are free to choose not to participate in a ship-run excursion, opting to remain on board enjoying the on board amenities without the crowds, or by choosing to disembark at their leisure and exploring the ports on their own. Most ports in the Caribbean and Europe contain duty free shops, souvenirs stands and stores, or markets for shopping.
Norwegian offers a range of tour options in all ports of call. Passengers can read tour descriptions and book excursions in advance of sailing by referring to the Norwegian website. Here, accurate descriptions of excursion activities and sites are clearly laid out. As well, there is a rating based on physical exertion levels and those tours that are family oriented or ideal for children. Passengers always have the option to arrange for tours on their own in port but must be careful to note the “all aboard” time.
On board the Norwegian ships, the excursion desk is open, allowing passengers to ask questions and book tours. In addition, there are several electronic kiosks stationed around the ship which allow people to select and book their excursions electronically.
For those wishing to remain on board, the facilities on board such as the spa and shopping arcade often offer discounts on products and services while docked in port.
Freestyle Accommodations: Home Away from Home
Norwegian’s Freestyle accommodations refer to the variety of cabins available on board their ships. Covering a wide price range, these cabins range from inside windowless cabins, ocean view staterooms, balcony rooms, and large suites. As well, the room options include the flexibility of having up to 4 adults in one cabin and have the option of adjoining rooms for large parties traveling together. One thing, the cabins can be noisy, so do make sure you bring a supply of sleeping aids. I get mine from http://www.alterilreviewed.com.
